Visiting the "Shores of Gitche Gumee"
| |
By the shores of Gitche Gumee,
By the shining Big-Sea-Water,
Stood the wigwam of Nokomis,
Daughter of the Moon, Nokomis.
Dark behind it rose the forest,
Rose the black and gloomy pine-trees,
Rose the firs with cones upon them;
Bright before it beat the water,
Beat the clear and sunny water,
Beat the shining Big-Sea-Water.
from "The Song of Hiawatha, by Longfellow (Warning! VERY LONG POEM!)

- Buy a copy of -Lake Superior Magazine
I've subscribed for about six years. They have great pictures and stories about the lake. My Lake Superior Page was a "Hot Spot" in LSM's Feb/March issue, in Rhonda's LakeLinks! Read my letter to the Editor that was printed in the Oct/Nov 96 issue.
- Check lake levels at- Hydrograph-Duluth Entry and Hydrograph-Superior Entry
Live data from the Minnesota gauging station on the Duluth ship canal and the Wisconsin station at the Superior entry. For lovers of trivial data, the gauging stations are large metal boxes at the midpoint of the south wall of each respective entry. You will see tubes leading into the water from each box. I accidently "discovered" the Superior Entry station while shipwatching, having walked past it many times in the past without realizing what it was. I must have been too intent on the ships. :-)
