Kinsman Independent.

The Kinsman Independent is in town to pick up wheat in Superior. It will be in town about 2 days. It will then carry its cargo to flour mills in Buffalo, New York. It was built in 1952 by the Defoe Shipbuilding Company at Bay City, Michigan and is owned by Kinsman Lines of Cleveland, Ohio. It is 642.3 feet long and has 19 hatches that open into 4 cargo compartments. It has a maximum carrying capacity of 18,800 tons. It is powered by a 4,000 HP steam turbine. When built, it was named Charles L. Hutchinson. In 1962, it was sold to the Ford Motor Company and renamed the Ernest R. Breech. It was then sold in 1988 to Kinsman Lines and renamed Kinsman Independent.
