Salties at Anchor
July 24:
Boatwatchers in Duluth today are seeing the unusual midsummer sight of
four salties anchored off shore. Midsummer grain traffic usually is
light, especially in saltie traffic. But this year international demand
is heavy and U.S. grain stocks are small, so there's more traffic and
more delays. Vessels anchored off shore are Kapitonas Medvedev, Pomorze
Zachodnie, Golden Sky and Ocean Leader. Medvedev is waiting for a berth
at Superior's Peavey elevator while the other three are forming what
will likely be a long line for Harvest States Cooperative in Superior.
Kinsman Indpt. already is loading at HSC, but is due out today if rain
doesn't delay loading too much.
