School Visitations:
Clear
Lake Veterans' Memorial (CLVM) School Visitation Program is very
successful. This program features an annual visit by 6 area 5th, 6th or 7th grade
classes. Each visiting student may be asked to make a patriotic poster, write
a poem or construct some other patriotic project.
These
projects are later bound and displayed at neighboring nursing homes. In late
May each year nearly 400 children visit the Veterans' Memorial and PBO (Paulson Brothers
Ordnance) with the later organization being rsponsible for giving a tour through their
Cannon Factory and giving mini lectures about the Civil War..
Respective schools are given the honor to select a
classmate(s) to carry the "Wreath of Remembrance". Those students then place the
wreath at the base of the Black Cenotaph which has the names of 65 Clear Lake
men and women veterans. Everyone of those brave troops were from the Clear
Lake area and they are a symbol of sacrifice for our freedom.
After each school's visitation, certificates and commemorative pens are awarded to each
student. In past years many students have visited the "Guest Book"
section of our web page. It is advisable to visit that section and view some of the
student reactions. Each of those schools (Amery, Clayton, Clear Lake, Glenwood City,
Prairie Farm, and Turtle Lake) are planning to visit the Memorial.
Most importantly, follow up visits are made by members of the committee
to participating schools. At that time students are permitted to share
experiences in small group situations which allow them to relate personal
experiences with military veterans.

make a corresponding visit to PBO Cannon Factory where they can see one of the largest
private Civil War Cannon Collections in the World. In addition Bernie and Bruce Paulson
are Historians with a vast knowledge of our Civil War. Students
may bring cameras to take pictures at both the Memorial and PBO.
Memorial Day - May 28:
As usual a large crowd is expected at 11 pm. Among some of the events planned
for that day is an "All Veterans' March", several speakers, shared
patriotic music, participation in a public wreath laying ceremony, music by the
Clear lake High School Band, candle ceremony, a salute by the Clear Lake Color
Guard, taps rendered by a live bugler and lastly the raising of our
American Flag to full staff. Most visitors share their love of our country in
an historic, memorable fashion. Memorial Day at the Clear Lake Veterans' Memorial is a
time of year when Patriotism is practiced by all in attendance.
At 3 P.M. the names of all Wisconsin men and women
veterans KIA in Iraqi Freedon War will be read before the Black Cenotaph. As
each name is read, a bell will be tolled for their sacrifice. Gone from
this life but to be remembered forever. They are the substance from which heroes are born!
Flag Day - June 14:
Roadside flag @ the Veterans' Memorial will be flown @ 1/2 staff until 6 P.M. New flags
shall replace torn or tattered flags.
A
special day of recognition for our American Flag by our American Legion Post
108 which will have a flag burning ceremony at the town square beginning at 7 P.M.
All citizens are encouraged to bring their tattered, torn, soiled or worn out flags
for a ceremony where flags are properly disposed of by burning. All
responsible groups are invitied to attend.
Independance Day - July 4th:
Come and visit Historic Clear Lake Veterans' Memorial. Make special day to place a photo,
flower, special item of remembrance for a veteran or just something Patriotic such as a
minature flag.
National POW - MIA Day
(3d Friday in September):
A Wreath
and Candle Ceremony will be held at the Clear Lake Veterans Memorial at
6 P.M. Remember to honor all POWs and the nearly 90,000 MIAs.
Veterans' Day - November 11:
Attend the annual Veterans Day Program at Clear Lake High School. At 1:30 and 3:00 P.M.
attend programs sponsored by the Veterans' Memorial at Golden Age and Willow Ridge Nursing
Homes in Amery.
Buy a Xmas wreath and place it on the grave of a Veteran or
at the Veterans' Memorial.
