In 1990, Albania ended 44 years of xenophobic communist rule and established a multiparty democracy. The transition has proven difficult as corrupt governments have tried to deal with severe unemployment and widespread gangsterism.
The most recent difficulties in Albania have been on account of a nationwide pyramid scheme. The Militant reports that over 500,000 Albanians were lured by exorbitant interest rates to deposit their savings in fraudulent investment funds, promoted by state television. The pyramid has crumbed and the people are likely to take to the streets. Without capable leadership, the nation of Albania could fall into chaos.
