Guinea-Bissau

In 1994, 20 years after independence from Portugal, the country's first multiparty legislative and presidential elections were held. However, the transition to democracy has not been a smooth.  Guinea-Bissau's agriculture based economy is among the least developed in the world and their government has a long history of instability.  Some predict, that if the current situation in Guinea-Bissau fails to improve, the will army rebell. This could trigger a bloody civil war that would drive hundreds of thousands of people from their homes, spelling disaster for the country.

Guinea-Bissau follows a non-aligned foreign policy.  The nation seeks friendly and cooperative relations with a wide variety of states and organizations.
