My Straight family hails from northwest Illinois, primarily in rural Jo Daviess County where my father was born.  Welcome Straight first appears in Illinois in the 1870 census in adjacent Stephenson County.

Welcome was born in or near Providence, Rhode Island on July 28, 1850.  Less than a month later, he and his mother Matilda appear in the 1850 census in the Town of Smithfield, Providence County, Rhode Island.  Matilda and Welcome were living with Richard and Louisa Leaver, along with four Inman children ages 6-17.

Welcome, Matilda, and the Inmans move west together.  About 1860, the families settle briefly, in Perry County in southern Indiana.  And by 1870, the families have moved west to northwestern Illinois.

To date, I have found nothing regarding Welcome's father.  I believe that Matilda was likely born an Inman and that Louisa was her mother.

Inman Family
Assuming Matilda is an Inman and the daughter of Louisa, the following is the most likely scenario with some key dates:

1807     Louisa ??? born in Rhode Island

before 1829   Louisa married ??? Inman
1829     Matilda Inman born in Rhode Island
1830     Harriet Inman born in Rhode Island
1833     Minerva Inman born in Rhode Island
1836     Gilbert Inman born in Rhode Island
1842     Edward Inman born in Rhode Island
1844     Thomas Inman born in Providence County, Rhode Island
1847     Harriet Inman marries Jesse Bicknell in Kent County, Rhode Island

before 1850
Speculation:  Matilda Inman marries ??? Straight;  Louisa's husband ??? Inman dies;
Does she marry Richard Leaver, or is her surname inadvertently left off?

1850     Census (see Straight timeline above)
1853     Jesse Bicknell, husband of Harriet dies
1859     Minerva Inman marries Edwin Williams in Perry County, Iowa
1860     Census (see Straight timeline above)
1861     Minerva (Inman) Billings dies (discrepancy with location)

before 1868  Thomas Inman marries Eliza Eggleston.  They would have: Delila, Gilbert, Jeanette, & Almeda
before 1869  Edward Inman marries Mary ???.  They would have: Hattie, Abbie, Eddie, & Aarrd
before 1870  Matilda Straight marries William Billings

1880     Thomas Inman and Louisa Inman die in Montgomery County, Iowa

Ponderings & Some Research Goals
1.  I lose track of Matilda after the 1880 Census.  Perhaps they moved from Jo Daviess County.

2.  I have copies of no records for Thomas and Louisa from Montgomery County, Iowa.  Source for information was a website on the Internet.

3.  A Welcome Inman appears in the 1830 Census in the Town of Smithfield, Providence County, Rhode Island.  This is the same township as the 1850 Census with the family.  Could this Welcome be the first husband of Louisa and the mother of Matilda?

4.  Other than census records and the marriage record of Minerva, I have very few actual records for the Inman siblings.  First priority should be the marriage of Harriet to Jesse Bicknell which is report to have occurred on  March 14, 1847 in Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island.
